Vibraception: Investigations in Wavespace (2025)

edited by Jan St. Werner with Nikola Bojíc and Petar Millet

Published by KVerlag, with MaMa (Multimedia Institute) and MSU Zagreb (Muzej suvremene umjetnosti)

We often think of space as static, defined by architecture, form, or function—but what if space were understood instead through waves, pulses, and resonances? Vibraception: Investigations in Wavespace brings together a range of experimental and theoretical approaches to understanding space as shaped by such vibratory forces. Conceived as a companion to a series of site-responsive sound interventions recently realized by sound artist Jan St. Werner in and around MSU, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, this beautifully designed book documents and expands upon these sonic explorations from myriad interdisciplinary conceptual angles.

The core investigations in Vibraception have been conducted by Michael Akstaller, Rudyard Schmidt, Gascia Ouzounian, Brett Mommersteeg, Nikola Bojić, Damir Gamulin, David Grubbs, and Jan St. Werner. These are complemented by contributions from Louis Chude-Sokei, Marina Peterson, Madison Greenstone, Andy Graydon, Marta Pedišić Buća, and Ana Škegro. Book design by Damir Gamulin.

SONCITIES contributes three chapters: ‘Restless States’: a conversation between Gascia Ouzounian, Brett Mommersteeg, and Jan St. Werner; Ouzounian’s ‘Encounters with the Vibraceptional Plate,’ a reflection on the SONCITIES design commission Vibraceptional Plate by St. Werner with Michael Akstaller, and Mommersteeg’s ‘Confusion and Vibration.’ These are available for download in the links below.
