‘Counterlistening’ (article)

Ouzounian, Gascia. ‘Counterlistening’. English studies in Canada, August 2023, Vol.46 (2-4), p.311-317.

This essay appears as part of the Forum on Disciplinary Listening convened by Jason Camlot and Katherine McLeod.

Abstract This essay proposes and advances the concept of ‘counterlistening’: a transgressive, clandestine, speculative, anarchic, urgent mode of listening that listens against received knowledges and dominant cultures of listening; and that subverts and confounds disciplinary boundaries. It develops the idea of counterslistening in connection to artists, theorists, and activists whose work puts pressure on normative ideas of, and approaches to, listening.
